Abstract
The role of the companions and their position is one of the most important topics in the history of early Islam. This importance, apart from their prominent position, has been created due to the influence of the role of the companions in the political, jurisprudential, and theological orientations of Muslims in later periods. However, the historical texts in the early Islamic centuries did not provide a clear definition of the examples of the companions. The main criteria of these texts for defining the companions is the temporal proximity and companionship of these people with the Prophet of Islam (PBUH). Historians of Islamic schools of thought have been influenced by theology and have not been able to play an independent role in this field. The theory of justice of the companions presented by Sunnis is one of them. Also, the case of describing the virtues of the companions or avoiding it is evaluated in the same direction. Nahj al-Balaghah, as one of the most reliable and advanced Islamic texts, has defined the position of companions and determined its examples based on spiritual and behavioral indicators, and not just the condition of time association.Nahj al-Balaghah, by expressing many virtues of the companions, expresses their active role in validating the position of Prophet’s companions and preserving the value of this position. According to Nahj al-Balaghah, being a companion does not prevent people from criticizing the performance of companions.
