The sermons, letters, and short sayings of Imam Ali (AS) in Nahj al-Balaghah are rich in rhetorical devices. At times, a failure to recognize these devices and to translate them accurately—while considering the linguistic and cultural requirements of the target language—has led translators to stumble. Since providing an accurate translation is one of the key means of persuading the audience, it is essential to observe the precise equivalents of these rhetorical elements. This article adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to examine certain appellation devices—vaw, fa, hatta, lakin, and bal—in the translations by Ayati, Ansarian, Dashti, Shahidi, Faiz al-Islam, and Makarem Shirazi. The findings suggest that in Persian translations, it is often more appropriate to omit direct equivalents for vaw and fa. The term hatta is best rendered as pas (then) in Persian. Furthermore, appellation can also be expressed through other words in the sermons, such as wali and amma. The term bal appears in both affirmative and corrective (negative) forms in the sermons of Nahj al-Balaghah, and proper attention must be given to its expressive function in translation.
