Abstract
The present study examines the thirty-second sermon of Nahj al-Balaghah based on John Searle's speech act theory. The main question is how this theory is used and applied in analyzing the propositions of the sermon and the dimensions of its use for a better understanding and explanation of the text. The claim and assumption of the research is the possibility of using Searle's theory in analyzing the sermons of Nahj al-Balaghah. The findings indicate that assertive speech acts are the most frequently used in this sermon. Imam Ali(peace be upon him) employs this type of act in describing phenomena of the world and society. For example, in the typology of people of the time into five groups, the assertive act is clearly evident. The expressive speech act comes next. The intention of His Holiness in using these propositions is to express a state with the aim of lamenting the current situation, which signifies an expressive act. The directive speech act is also observed in this sermon. The intended point of His Holiness in his sermon is an effort through warning, commanding, and advising to persuade and compel the listener to devalue the world, refrain from attachment to it, and learn from the predecessors. This analysis shows that Searle's theory is an effective tool for a deeper understanding of the sermons of Nahj al-Balaghah.
