An Analysis of Exaggeration in the Translation of Verbal Nouns in Nahj al-Balaghah Based on Catford's Linguistic Theory (Case Study of Shahidi and Fouladvand's Translations)

Abstract
Catford has attempted to systematize translation by applying specific rules, thereby assisting both the translator and the audience. Translating the semantic style of exaggeration present in verbal nouns in Nahj al-Balaghah, based on Catford's theory, will be a useful resource to enlighten the audience with the profound concepts of this book through a descriptive-analytical method. The current study, by analyzing the semantic structure present in verbal nouns in two translations by Shahidi and Fouladvand, has reached certain conclusions; structurally, the translators in the target language either used the same Arabic verbal noun or employed a different morphological-syntactic structure that does not accurately reflect the concept of exaggeration. In some cases, interpretive additions were used to reflect the concept of exaggeration; however, they failed to convey the meaning correctly by utilizing available equivalents. Structurally, the translator was forced to make many changes in their discourse to succeed in conveying the meaning present in the infallible's words. They tried to convey the original meaning to the audience with the help of various nominal and verbal groups. Perhaps the presence of various adverbs of manner, emphasis, similarity, etc., could have been a solution for the translator; however, in many cases, the full meaning has still not been conveyed.
